  4. This program is shareware, *not* public domain or freeware. You are allowed
  5. to evaluate this program free of charge for a period of two weeks; after
  6. that, you should destroy it if you do not intend to use it, or pay the
  7. registration fee to carry on using it. The registered version has more
  8. features than the free version, so there’s a carrot *and* a stick ;-).

  10. About this program

  13.    Smart Quotes, now in its sixth installment, is a small utility to help you
  14. make your documents look more professional, by replacing quotation marks or
  15. other combinations of characters by their more typographically appropriate
  16. versions. If you type a double quote (") or a single quote (') it will
  17. replace it by the appropriate typographically correct quote (open “ or closed
  18. ” rather than neutral "). It will also try to correct typos: if you
  19. accidentally type “SOmething LIke THis”, it will replace it by “Something
  20. Like This”. Last, but by no means least, it can replace short sequences of
  21. characters by others, like Impression’s abbreviation facility, which allows
  22. you to type ligatures (fi, Œ), accents (é, Ç) and other characters (×,÷,—)
  23. without using the Alt key. It actually goes further than this, as it can also
  24. ensure commas are always before quotes, remove any extraneous spaces after
  25. full stops, and even (if you really want it to) ROT13 your text.

  30. Mouse clicks

  33.    There are quite a few things you can do by clicking the mouse on the
  34. Smart Quotes icon, so here is a complete list:

  36.    Select        Open and close settings window
  37.    Adjust        Disable and re-enable substitution
  38.    Shift-click   Disable and re-enable quotes substitution
  39.    Ctrl-click    Disable and re-enable expand substitution
  40.    Alt-click     Disable and re-enable typo checking
  41.    Shift-Ctrl:   Select drags the icon around, repositioning it on the icon
  42.                  bar or “tearing off” a floating window.
  43.                  Adjust switches between the icon bar and the floating window.

  45.    You can also do the following things by clicking on the Close icon of
  46. Smart Quotes' windows:
  47.    Select        Closes window (standard RISC OS behaviour)
  48.    Adjust     Opens Choices directory
  49.    Shift-Select  Iconises window (standard RISC OS behaviour)
  50.    Shift-Adjust  Runs !Chars (or whatever application has been set up)
  51.    Ctrl-Select   Closes all Smart Quotes’ windows
  52.    Ctrl-Adjust   As Adjust

  54.    NB: Because the “Other choices” window is actually “owned” by a separate
  55. program, Ctrl-Select on its close icon will not close the other windows, and
  56. Ctrl-Select on another window’s close icon will not close the “Other choices”
  57. window.

  59.    Clicking on the expand window will edit the expand underneath the
  60. pointer.
